Any hopes Ghana had of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 were dashed after a 1-1 draw against Angola in Luanda. The Black Stars’ failure to secure three points means they will miss the tournament for the first time since 2004.
Coach Otto Addo made significant changes to the starting lineup, handing debut starts to Razak Simpson and Michael Baidoo. Abdul Manaf Nurudeen replaced Lawrence Ati-Zigi in goal, while Jordan Ayew led the attack.
Ayew opened the scoring with a breathtaking 35-yard free kick in the 19th minute, beating the Angolan goalkeeper with ease. However, Ghana’s lead was short-lived.
Angola was awarded a penalty some minutes later, but Nurudeen made an incredible save to deny M’Bala Nzola. Baidoo’s effort in the 44th minute was blocked by the Angolan defense, and Ghana entered halftime with a slim advantage.
Angola equalized in the second half, capitalizing on Ghana’s momentary defensive lapse. Zini connected with Milson’s cross to beat Nurudeen and level the score.
Ghana pushed for a winner, with Kudus’ effort in the 71st minute going wide. Jordan Ayew played in Ransford Yeboah, but his close-range shot was saved.
Next for the Ghana is the final group game versus Niger faces Niger on Monday in their final group game in Accra.
