Frustrated fans of the Ghanaian national team, the Black Stars, turned violent after a stunning 1-0 loss to Angola in a 2025 AFCON qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium on Wednesday.
The defeat marked the end of Ghana’s 24-year unbeaten streak at the stadium, and fans grew increasingly agitated throughout the match as the Black Stars struggled to create scoring opportunities on a poor-quality pitch.
Angola’s Felicio Milson scored in added time, sealing the victory and giving Angola their first win in Group F, which also includes Sudan and Niger.
Following Milson’s late goal, some fans expressed frustration by throwing plastic bottles onto the pitch. Once the game ended, several fans breached the stadium’s inner perimeter, trampling over and breaking wooden pitch panels.
The violence began even before the match, as some fans forced their way into the stadium by breaking through a gate at the T.I. Ahmadiyya end of the grounds.
The Black Stars will look to bounce back from this disappointing loss when they face Niger on Monday, September 9 in Morocco at 15:00 GMT.
The Ghana Football Association is yet to comment on the incidents of violence.
