The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has reiterated his administration’s determination to restore order in the Central Business District (CBD), assuring that the ongoing decongestion operation will not be a “nine-day wonder.”

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, May 20, following the launch of the operation, the Mayor emphasized that the initiative is part of a sustained effort to reclaim public spaces and ease both pedestrian and vehicular movement across the city.

“This exercise is not a nine-day wonder; we are on the street till we make sure that the roads are clear. We are not done. For the next hour, we are going back to the street. From here we are going to Circle, and if there is more strength, we will go to Kaneshie. Then we continue tomorrow,” the Mayor stated.

The campaign, spearheaded by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), is aimed at tackling congestion, enforcing city by-laws, and improving sanitation in key areas of the capital.

The first phase of the exercise is focused on decongesting areas such as Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka—all known for heavy street vending and traffic congestion.

According to city authorities, the operation is a strategic step toward restoring discipline, ensuring public safety, and improving urban mobility within Accra.
