Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has affirmed to Ghanaians that the ongoing standoff between Parliament and the Judiciary does not constitute a constitutional crisis, following a Supreme Court ruling that blocked his bid to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, November 6, Bagbin asserted that the issue remains firmly within the framework of Ghana’s constitution and called on the public to stay calm.

“There’s no constitutional crisis in this country,” he stated emphatically. “I repeat, there’s no constitutional crisis in this country.”

The impasse arose after the Supreme Court’s decision prevented Bagbin from vacating the seats of four Members of Parliament who have either switched party affiliation or announced intentions to run as independents in the upcoming elections. Bagbin argued that these MPs had violated party allegiance, which, in Parliament’s view, justified the removal of their seats.

Bagbin further suggested that the clash reflects a deeper alignment between the Executive and Judiciary aimed at weakening Parliament’s authority. He warned that such actions could undermine Ghana’s democratic principles by compromising the independence of Parliament, setting what he described as a “troubling precedent.”
