First Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Danquah Smith Buttey, is currently presiding over a critical National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, stepping in for National Chairman Stephen Ayensu Ntim, who has been temporarily excused from official duties due to health concerns.

Mr. Buttey’s leadership at the NEC meeting comes in the wake of a formal letter from Mr. Ntim’s family to the party’s Council of Elders, dated June 16, requesting that he be relieved of his responsibilities to focus on urgent medical treatment.

The family cited “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation” as the basis for their appeal, stressing that further participation in party affairs could jeopardize his well-being and infringe on his personal rights.

The letter, signed by Kingsley Oteng (Family Head), Adelaide Ntim (MP), and other close relatives, acknowledged Mr. Ntim’s decades-long service to the NPP — from his tenure as First National Deputy Chairman to his current role as National Chairman.

Despite his dedication, the family noted, “Steve is not well at the moment,” and requested his exemption from chairing the June 17 NEC meeting at the Alisa Hotel.

Under Mr. Buttey’s leadership, the NEC is expected to deliberate on several pressing issues, including a review of the party’s Constitutional Review Committee’s report, proposed internal reforms, and strategic preparations ahead of the 2024 general elections.
