President John Mahama has sworn in Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
His appointment was announced on Thursday, March 13, and he officially took over from Dr. George Akuffo Dampare at a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Friday, March 14. The event was attended by senior government officials and top security personnel.
Who is COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno?
COP Yohuno has been in the Ghana Police Service for over 40 years, serving in various leadership roles. Before becoming IGP, he was the Deputy IGP in charge of Operations, where he played a key role in maintaining national security.
In July 2024, he was appointed Deputy IGP by former President Nana Akufo-Addo. Over the years, he has served as Accra Central Divisional Commander, Accra Regional Operations Commander, Deputy Accra Regional Commander, and later Accra Regional Commander.
In 2015, he became the Director-General of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department, and in 2016, he was reassigned as Director-General of Administration. His contributions to crime prevention and public safety earned him the Grand Medal in 2011 for his efforts in fighting armed robbery. He was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) in 2012 and Commissioner of Police (COP) in 2016.
COP Yohuno attended Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School and later earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Ghana. He also holds an Executive MBA in Project Management from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
As he takes over as IGP, COP Yohuno is expected to focus on strengthening law enforcement, improving police professionalism, and restoring public trust in the Ghana Police Service. His leadership will be crucial in tackling crime and ensuring discipline within the force.
