President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for a peaceful, free, and fair election in the upcoming 2024 polls, emphasizing the role of the Electoral Commission (EC) in ensuring transparency and integrity in the process.
Speaking at the annual conference of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) in Kumasi on Monday, the President outlined the responsibilities of the EC as it prepares to oversee the election.
“The EC must ensure that the process is fair to all parties and that the results reflect the true will of the people,” President Akufo-Addo said.
He stressed that the commission should put all necessary logistical arrangements in place to guarantee a smooth voting process.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of resolving any disputes that may arise in a swift and transparent manner.
The President reiterated the need for the EC to maintain its sole authority over the declaration of election results. “It is imperative that the Electoral Commission remains the sole authority responsible for declaring election results, to preserve the integrity and credibility of the electoral process,” he stated.
President Akufo-Addo also addressed concerns about violence and intimidation during elections, calling on the EC to strictly enforce laws against vigilantism.
He emphasized the need for the commission to act within the confines of the law while safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
The President’s speech extended beyond the role of the EC, as he called on civil society organizations, the media, and citizens to actively participate in ensuring a peaceful election.
He urged all stakeholders to play their part in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy and contributing to a transparent electoral process.
The conference, themed “Peaceful, fair and transparent elections: the key to sustainable democracy,” attracted legal practitioners and political stakeholders as discussions centred on the upcoming elections and the nation’s democratic future.
