Police respond to cocoa smuggling incident at Missiga checkpoint near Bawku

The Ghana Police Service says it has in collaboration with other security agencies, resolved  a misunderstanding at the Missiga security checkpoint near Bawku in the Upper East Region on October 9, 2024.

The incident involved personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and the police over the interception of a smuggled consignment of cocoa beans.

According to a statement from the police, the consignment was seized based on intelligence, and security personnel were in the process of escorting it to the Bawku Divisional Police Command for further investigation.

The cocoa beans were to be handed over to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), and the culprits involved in the smuggling were to be prosecuted.

police clarified that they were not complicit in the smuggling operations, contrary to rumors, and reiterated that they had recently intercepted and processed two other smuggled cocoa consignments in the region. These shipments had also been handed over to COCOBOD for prosecution.

Following the incident, the leadership of the three security agencies involved acted swiftly to deescalate tensions and maintain cooperation.

The Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC), chaired by the Regional Minister, also stepped in to ensure that measures were in place to prevent a recurrence.
