The Appointments Committee of Parliament has officially commenced the vetting process for seven individuals nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to serve on the Supreme Court of Ghana.
The nominees — Justices Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Senyo Dzamefe, Kweku Tawiah Ackah-Boafo, Philip Bright Mensah, Janpere Bartels-Kodwo, and Hafisata Ameleboba — were put forward in line with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint judges to the apex court in consultation with the Council of State and with parliamentary approval.
Leading the vetting process is Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a Court of Appeal judge and Ghana’s longest-serving judge currently on the bench. His career spans decades of judicial service, and he is widely known for his role as the sole commissioner of the 2014 Commission of Inquiry into Ghana’s controversial participation in the Brazil FIFA World Cup.
The vetting of all seven nominees is expected to take place over the next few days, with Parliament set to make final determinations on their approval following the Committee’s recommendations.
