The Ghana Police Service has denied reports of a shooting incident at the Kumasi office of the Electoral Commission (EC), clarifying that no demonstrator was injured by police during the incident.
The statement comes in the wake of a nationwide protest organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which saw tensions escalate in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. The clash occurred when police prevented some protesters from joining NDC executives who were inside the EC’s regional office to present a petition as part of the party’s “Enough Is Enough” demonstration.
Tensions boiled over, leading to the breaking of barricades and the shattering of glass doors at the EC office.
A policewoman was reportedly injured during the altercation, and one individual was arrested amidst reports of gunfire.
However, the police, in an official statement, dismissed the claims of gunfire, stating that demonstrators who violated the agreed protest protocols by forcing their way into the EC compound were restrained but there was no shooting.
The police maintained that order was restored without any demonstrator being harmed.
