The Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has granted formal approval for members of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to abstain from court appearances today, Monday, June 30, 2025, in observance of this year’s Martyrs’ Day commemoration.

In a circular dated Tuesday, June 17, 2025, and distributed to all judges and magistrates nationwide, the Acting Chief Justice reaffirmed the long-standing tradition that allows legal practitioners to withdraw their services on this solemn day.

The exemption enables full participation in activities honouring the memory of judges who were killed while serving the nation.

“In conformity with tradition, approval has been granted for members of the Ghana Bar Association to withdraw their services from court appearances on Monday, 30th June 2025,” the statement read.

Martyrs’ Day is a significant annual event that commemorates the tragic deaths of Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong, as well as Major Sam Acquah (Rtd.). The four were abducted and murdered on June 30, 1982, during a dark and turbulent period in Ghana’s history.

The circular was copied to the Acting Judicial Secretary, the Court Manager of the Law Court Complex, Supervising High Court Judges, and all Registrars to ensure proper coordination and compliance with the directive.
