Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has announced his withdrawal from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You” tour due to security concerns stemming from a recent violent altercation in Kumasi.
The decision follows an incident involving the stabbing of a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student who was performing with Unity Hall’s Jama group at a campaign event organized by Agyapong’s team at the Pentecost Church in Bantama.
According to Agyapong’s team, a friend of the former MP gifted money to the performers during the event. However, chaos erupted when a group of armed men—allegedly connected to the NPP—arrived and forcibly took the money from the Jama group.
A confrontation ensued, during which gunshots were reportedly fired and one member of the group was stabbed. The victim was transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment.
The incident prompted Agyapong and his team to file a complaint with the Kumasi Central Police. Speaking to journalists afterward, Agyapong expressed deep concern about the safety of his team and supporters, stating that the threat to their lives left him no choice but to withdraw.
“In light of the threats to our safety, my team and I are stepping away. I cannot ensure their protection, so it’s best we exit and allow Dr. Bawumia to continue his campaign,” Agyapong told the media.
He also affirmed his commitment to seeking justice for the injured student.
