Actor and NDC Parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has issued a public apology for his controversial remarks made during a constituency debate.
Dumelo’s comments, which linked his political opponent Lydia Alhassan to the death of her late husband, sparked widespread criticism and upset many Ghanaians.
During the debate, Dumelo suggested that Lydia Alhassan was responsible for the death of her late husband, who was the MP for the constituency until his passing. According to him, Madam Alhassan needed to answer questions regarding her husband’s death, in response to chants from constituents and perceived personal attacks from Ms. Alhassan’s supporters.
In a post, John Dumelo said, “I apologize and unreservedly retract my previous comments. I extend my sincere and unconditional apologies to Hon. Lydia Alhassan for my remarks during the Media General public engagement (Community Manifesto) concerning the death of her husband”.
“To everyone who knows me, both in my private life and political activities, it is clear that those statements do not reflect my values or what I stand for,” Dumelo said in his apology statement.
“My comments were in response to personal attacks by supporters of the honorable minister, including false allegations regarding my mother’s death. However, I recognize that my reaction was inappropriate.”
Dumelo retracted his comments and expressed regret for any offense caused to Madam Lydia Alhassan, his constituents, and others affected by his remarks. He assured the people of Ayawaso West Wuogon of his commitment to the development and progress of the constituency.
