The Government of Ghana has announced plans to evacuate its citizens from Iran in response to escalating tensions and conflict between Israel and Iran.
The decision was made public by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a statement shared on social media on Monday.
He emphasized that the move is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding Ghanaian lives.
“In the interest of protecting Ghanaian lives, the Mahama Administration has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following the escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.
As part of the evacuation effort, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel. The operation will be conducted via Iran’s land borders and includes all Ghanaian nationals residing in the country—among them students, professionals, and embassy staff.
The Minister also revealed that the government is keeping a close watch on developments in Israel and has scaled down operations at Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv. Ghanaians in Israel have been urged to remain in regular contact with the consular department.
“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” Mr. Ablakwa added.
He concluded by renewing Ghana’s appeal for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, urging both nations to cease hostilities and pursue diplomatic solutions.
