Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has issued a formal apology following his recent statements regarding the performance of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which sparked a significant public backlash.
During a speech at his unveiling ceremony in Kumasi on July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh made remarks comparing President Akufo-Addo’s impact to that of previous Ghanaian presidents including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
These comments, he acknowledges, were perceived by some as disrespectful towards former President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and other past heads of state.
In his statement, Dr. Prempeh clarified that his comments were intended to reflect his personal opinion on President Akufo-Addo’s achievements rather than to denigrate any former president.
He reiterated his respect for all past leaders, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor.
“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated.
He further expressed regret for any discomfort his comments may have caused, noting the concerns raised by the public.
Dr. Prempeh’s statement concludes with a sincere apology for the unintended disrespect, reaffirming his admiration for the contributions of all past presidents to the nation’s development.
The Vice Presidential candidate’s remarks come at a critical time as the NPP gears up for the upcoming elections, with unity and respect for the nation’s history being pivotal to their campaign.
