The government has commenced the construction of 609 new homes tailored specifically for public servants across the country as part of its ongoing efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, during a press briefing in Accra on Monday, September 30, 2024.
Speaking on the new initiative, known as the District Housing Programme, the Minister stated, “These housing units are crucial in our efforts to tackle Ghana’s housing deficit, currently standing at 1.8 million units. Providing decent homes for public servants enhances their dignity and enables them to perform their duties more effectively.”
The housing units are being developed to meet the needs of essential public sector workers, including teachers, nurses, police officers and other government employees, particularly those stationed in rural and underserved areas.
“Our public servants deserve quality housing that fosters a conducive environment for their work and family life,” he added. He emphasized that the housing units would be constructed across various districts, ensuring access to proper accommodation even in the most remote areas.
In addition, the Minister provided updates on other major housing projects, including the stalled Koforidua Affordable Housing Project, which will soon resume construction under the management of the State Housing Company Limited.
Addressing the delayed Saglemi Housing Project, initially intended to deliver 5,000 units, the Minister disclosed that negotiations are underway to transfer the project to a private developer, who will complete and sell the housing units without requiring further government expenditure.
The government is also collaborating with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) to secure sustainable financing for housing initiatives, highlighting GIIF’s role in developing innovative funding models to support efforts in bridging the housing deficit and ensuring more Ghanaians have access to affordable accommodation.
