Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa has announced that the Commission will conduct a second exhibition of the voter register to address any remaining discrepancies.
Speaking at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, which included various political parties, Jean Mensa outlined plans for this additional exhibition to be held online.
This digital process will allow voters to verify their details on the provisional register without incurring any cost.
Jean Mensa emphasized that the online platform is ready and will enable the Electoral Commission (EC) to identify and resolve errors that may have been overlooked during the initial registration and exhibition.
Voters will be given a set period to report any discrepancies in their registration details to the EC, ensuring that any issues are corrected before the final register is compiled.
The decision to hold this second exhibition comes in response to concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which had called for a forensic audit of the voter register.
The NDC’s demands stemmed from their belief that inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the voter list could undermine the credibility of the upcoming elections.
While the EC acknowledged that some discrepancies were identified in the initial register, Jean Mensa described the NDC’s call for an audit as premature.
She noted that the Commission is still exploring various mechanisms to safeguard the accuracy and integrity of the register before resorting to any drastic measures like a forensic audit.
The Commission reassured all stakeholders that the integrity of the electoral process remains a priority and that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the register is accurate ahead of the upcoming elections.
