GNECC condemns violence at O’Reilly SHS, urges immediate action

Following the death of a final-year general arts student, Edward Borketey Sackey at O’Reilly Senior High School, the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has expressed deep sorrow and condemnation of the unfortunate incident.

The incident which happened  on Monday, September 2, 2024, withnessed an altercation between the deceased and the assalant identified as Godwin. The altercation escalated from a personal dispute, resulting in Edward being fatally stabbed by a fellow student, Godwin.

The confrontation began over a disagreement related to wealth and status, tragically ending in violence. Edward succumbed to his injuries after being stabbed three times in the chest. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at LEKMA Hospital.

In response to the incident, the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Stephen Abamfo, confirmed that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested, and a full-scale investigation is currently underway. GNECC has expressed its support for this investigation, emphasizing the importance of a thorough and transparent process to ensure justice is served.

Furthermore, the coalition has called for urgent measures to address violence in schools and provide support for students facing conflicts.

GNECC extended its condolences to Edward’s family and friends, expressing deep sadness over the incident. “Such acts of violence have no place in our educational institutions,” the organization stated, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in creating safer school environments. They also stressed the importance of implementing support systems to help manage and resolve conflicts before they escalate.

The coalition has also urged the Ministry of Education and relevant authorities to take immediate steps to prevent such occurrences in the future. GNECC emphasized the need for effective conflict resolution programs and mental health support within schools to address the underlying issues that often lead to such violent outcomes.

Additionally, GNECC called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and teachers’ unions to periodically retrain teachers on maintaining discipline and resolving conflicts in schools. The coalition reiterated its commitment to working with educational authorities and community leaders to foster a culture of peace and respect in Ghanaian schools.
