The Ghana Urban Air Quality Project has taken a bold step in addressing air pollution in urban areas by organizing an innovative competition for schools within the Accra Metropolitan Area.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of air pollution while encouraging young minds to advocate for cleaner, healthier environments.

The competition, which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11—Sustainable Cities and Communities—brought together several schools, each presenting creative solutions to improve urban air quality.

After a spirited contest, Aburi Presby school B emerged as the winner. Speaking after their victory, the headmistress of the school, Cynthia Antwi, expressed her excitement and commended the efforts of both students and staff in achieving the milestone.

“Winning this competition means so much to us. It has taught us that hard work pays. We used to meet the learners over the weekend and on other days to prepare for this victory” she stated.

The second-place team was the St. John the Evangelist Catholic School. The school’s headmistress, Patience Andoh, also shared their enthusiasm and highlighted the need for collective action in combating air pollution.

Speaking to MX24 News, Prof. Kofi Amegah, the team lead for The Ghana Urban Air Quality Project, explained that the initiative was motivated by growing concerns about urban air pollution and its severe health impacts. He called on citizens to adopt sustainable practices and take part in efforts to improve air quality across the country.

“This event was designed to educate and inspire young minds to become advocates for clean air. Urban air pollution is a growing challenge, and we believe that through education and awareness, we can make a difference” he noted.

As urban centers like Accra continue to grow, the competition served as a powerful reminder of the role of education and collaboration in tackling environmental challenges.

The Ghana Urban Air Quality Project not only empowered students but also reinforced the message that clean air is a shared responsibility for all.
