Prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has lauded President John Dramani Mahama as the most prepared leader in Ghana’s political history, citing his extensive political journey and experience.
Speaking in an interview on Asaase Radio on Monday, Otchere-Darko offered a striking assessment of President Mahama’s career, noting his rise from local governance to the highest office in the land.
“I think the current president is probably the most prepared president we’ve had. From assemblyman all the way to where he is now — vice president, president — you’ve been in opposition, seen who your real friends are, learned from your mistakes, identified missed opportunities, and now you’ve been given another chance,” he stated.
Despite the commendation, Otchere-Darko, a key voice within the NPP, cautioned that Mahama faces enormous pressure to meet the high expectations of Ghana’s youth, particularly those inspired by his flagship 24-hour economy policy.
“The youth are unforgiving. They want jobs. They voted for you because they expect their aspirations to be met. Satisfying them in this world of social media, new media — where every government action is overexposed and exaggerated — is a huge challenge,” he observed.
He further argued that the government’s primary role should not be direct employment, but rather creating the conditions for individuals to thrive.
“Your role is not to fulfill people’s aspirations directly, but to create the enabling environment for them to pursue those aspirations. If the government does that — creating space and opportunity — the youth must also put in the hard work to realise their goals,” Otchere-Darko said.
His remarks come as President Mahama begins the first year of his return to power, with high public expectations for economic recovery and youth empowerment.
