Kylian Mbappe’s penalty was matched by Robert Lewandowski’s spot kick as Poland, already out of the running, held France to a tense 1-1 draw in Dortmund.
This result means the French team ends up in second place in Group D.
Mbappe scored in the 56th minute, marking his first goal in the European Championship and the first for a French player at Euro 2024.
He calmly converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Ousmane Dembele by Jakub Kiwior.
Although a win would have secured France the top spot in the group, Dayot Upamecano’s foul on Polish substitute Karol Swiderksi led to Lewandowski equalizing from the penalty spot in the 79th minute, following a retake due to the goalkeeper’s early movement.
With Austria clinching a late victory against the Netherlands, the draw places France in second position in Group D behind Austria.
They will now face the runner-up from Group E, where Romania, Belgium, Slovakia, and Ukraine are all tied on three points.
