Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the former Minister for Youth and Sports, has called for a complete overhaul of sports in Ghana, following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be held in Morocco next year.
This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana will not participate in the tournament, after finishing last in Group F with just three points, without a single win from six matches.
Ankrah expressed his disappointment in a recent interview about the state of sports in the country, particularly the Black Stars.
He emphasized the need for a comprehensive reset across all levels of sports in Ghana.
“It was very sad, especially when Kudus was about to take the penalty, and the way the crowd jeered at him—I was shocked. I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said.
“I believe it’s time for the entire country to take a step back, reassess the Black Stars, football, and sports in general, and rethink how we move forward. A complete reset is necessary.”
In the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has disbanded the Black Stars’ Management Committee.
The GFA’s Executive Council is expected to meet today to discuss the future of head coach Otto Addo.
