The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced plans to broadcast the upcoming Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting live later today, October 1.
This decision marks a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability in the EC’s interactions with political parties ahead of the December general elections.
According to the EC, the live telecast will give Ghanaians direct access to the discussions and decision-making processes within IPAC, an important platform where electoral reforms, operational challenges and strategies for credible elections are deliberated upon by representatives from all registered political parties and the EC.
The upcoming meeting is set to address issues such as voter registration, election logistics and the integrity of the electoral roll, with a particular focus on educating the public about the electoral register and election processes.
The EC emphasized that this move was made independently and was not influenced by any external demands, including those from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Previously, the NDC, Ghana’s largest opposition party, had called for the live broadcast of IPAC meetings, arguing that greater openness was needed in election-related discussions. At that time, the EC had rejected the request, asserting that live telecasts were unnecessary.
The NDC has welcomed this decision, noting that it will provide Ghanaians with the opportunity to witness the proceedings firsthand and independently evaluate the fairness of the process.
