The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service today, Monday, May 26, 2025.
This follows an unsuccessful attempt by a joint task force made up of National Security personnel and police officers to arrest him at his residence last Friday, May 23.
The attempted operation sparked immediate protests from NPP supporters, who gathered at the scene in large numbers, condemning the heavy security presence surrounding Wontumi’s home.
Although the exact reason behind the security operation remains undisclosed, Wontumi is said to have assured authorities of his willingness to cooperate and honor the CID’s invitation.
In an interview with Accra based Citi News, Wontumi’s legal counsel, Kwame Adom Appiah, emphasized their readiness to engage with law enforcement.
“We believe in democracy. Wontumi is not someone who would evade public scrutiny or flee the country. He has substantial business interests in Ghana and no intention of escaping. We were invited and we will comply,” Appiah stated.
He further stressed that his client has not committed any criminal offense and thus has no fear of facing the authorities.
