Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has confirmed the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi—popularly known as Adenta Kumi—in what he described as a troubling and aggressive dawn operation conducted by heavily armed state operatives.

In a Facebook post early Friday, Assafuah disclosed that Kumi was taken from his home roughly three hours prior by eight individuals believed to be operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

According to the MP, six of the operatives were masked and armed with AK-47 rifles, while the remaining two were dressed in plain clothes.

Describing the operation as a “Rambo-style” raid, Assafuah criticized the government’s handling of dissent, suggesting it raises serious concerns about free speech and governance in the country. He ended his post with the protest hashtag #FreeAdentaKumiNow.

Family members have corroborated the MP’s account, confirming to Citi News that Kumi was detained at dawn by a group of armed men they also believe to be from the NIB.

As of now, the reason for Kumi’s arrest has not been officially disclosed. Both the National Intelligence Bureau and the Ministry of National Security have remained silent on the matter.

Kumi, a former parliamentary candidate for Adenta on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket, has recently drawn attention for his petition to President John Mahama.

In his petition, Kumi called for the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice, citing concerns over potential misconduct and conflicts of interest.

He alleged that following the committee’s inaugural sitting on May 15, 2025, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory—counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori—at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.

Kumi claimed the judges and lawyer were overheard discussing issues related to the ongoing petition, a situation he believes compromises the impartiality of the inquiry.

The case has since sparked debate across political and civil society circles, with calls mounting for transparency and due process in addressing the circumstances surrounding Kumi’s arrest.
