The Former head of the Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahen, and his wife have filed a defamation lawsuit against Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine, following comments made during a March 24, 2025, press conference.
In the legal action brought against Dr. Ayine, the plaintiffs contend that his public comments wrongfully depicted them as individuals involved in criminal activities, including embezzlement of public funds and money laundering.
They argue that these allegations have caused significant harm to their reputations, leading to emotional trauma, public embarrassment, and distress, particularly impacting their children, who have reportedly faced mockery at school.
According to the suit, Dr. Ayine further disseminated these statements by publishing the full text online, and the accompanying video from the press conference has since gone viral across social media and news platforms—fueling ongoing public condemnation of the couple.
The plaintiffs assert that Dr. Ayine acted beyond his constitutional remit, allegedly attempting to damage their standing in the public eye without following legal procedures.
They also claim that his statements were made carelessly and without regard for the truth, and that he allegedly collaborated with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to have them detained, denying them the opportunity to defend themselves.
The legal filing outlines a number of grievances, including:
•Publicly labeling the plaintiffs as criminals without a court verdict;
•Spreading unfounded claims regarding their financial activities and travel records;
•Compromising national security by disclosing sensitive details;
•Using the media to imply guilt and suggest imprisonment ahead of any judicial determination.
The plaintiffs believe these actions were intentional, malicious, and amounted to an abuse of power meant to inflict the greatest possible damage to their reputation.
As part of the suit, they are requesting:
1.Exemplary and punitive damages for the dissemination of defamatory content made during the press conference held on March 24, 2025.
2.A permanent injunction to prevent Dr. Ayine from making or circulating any further defamatory remarks.
3.Compensation for legal expenses, including attorney’s fees.
During the press briefing, Dr. Ayine publicly accused the couple of various criminal acts. The pair allege that these accusations were false, damaging, and made without justification.
In a writ filed on Thursday, April 24, the couple is seeking exemplary and punitive damages, describing Dr. Ayine’s statements as “highly offensive, defamatory.”
They argue that the remarks, made in a widely broadcast public forum, have seriously harmed their reputations both personally and professionally.
They maintain that the Attorney General’s comments have caused irreparable harm to their standing in both public and professional spheres.
Per court procedures, Dr. Ayine has eight days from the date of service to respond to the suit. Failure to do so may result in a default judgment being entered against him.
