Former U.S. President Donald Trump has survived an assassination attempt at his golf course in West Palm Beach.
The FBI is investigating after Secret Service agents spotted a suspect armed with an AK-47 rifle and a camera near the Trump International Golf Course. The suspect fled but was later apprehended.
According to authorities, the man who pointed the rifle and was arrested is Ryan Wesley Routh. The officials identified the suspect on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the ongoing investigation.
Reuters found profiles on X, Facebook and LinkedIn for a Ryan Routh and public access to the Facebook and X profiles was removed hours after the shooting.
The three accounts bearing Routh’s name suggest he was an avid supporter of Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Trump, who was playing golf at the time, was unharmed. This is the second attempt on Trump’s life in recent months.
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has released a statement condemning the political violence following the assasination attempt on the former president.
“As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence,” Harris said in a statement, issued from the vice president’s office.
