Teachers return to classrooms as strike is called off

Teaching and learning in public basic schools are expected to resume today, Monday, October 12, after three pre-tertiary teacher unions suspended their nationwide industrial action over unpaid allowances and arrears.

The unions — the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers — embarked on the strike on September 25 to press the government to address their outstanding financial claims.

The industrial action was suspended on Friday, October 9, following negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

In a related development, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has pledged to settle outstanding promotion allowances owed to teachers by October 16.

The commitment came after the Council of State intervened to help resolve the disagreement between the unions and the government.

With the suspension of the strike, teachers are expected to return to their respective schools as discussions continue on the remaining concerns.

The development also brings renewed focus to delays in settling teachers’ entitlements and the need for the relevant authorities to ensure prompt payment to avoid further interruptions to academic activities.
