The Ministry of Education has welcomed the decision by three teacher unions to suspend their nationwide strike, paving the way for public basic schools to resume normal academic activities on Monday, October 12, 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry described the suspension as a positive development and called for sustained dialogue among the parties to resolve the remaining issues.

The statement, signed by the Ministry’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with the unions, the FWSC and other stakeholders to improve teachers’ welfare and maintain industrial harmony in the education sector.

The Ministry also stressed the need to ensure uninterrupted teaching and learning, adding that resolving the outstanding concerns would be important to sustaining the delivery of quality education.

It expressed appreciation to teachers, parents, learners and other stakeholders for their patience during the strike and urged all parties to maintain the cooperation that led to the agreement.

The Ministry says it remains committed to creating an environment where teachers receive the necessary support to contribute to the transformation of Ghana’s education sector.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) called off the industrial action on Friday, October 9, following negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

The strike, which began on September 25, was in protest against delays in addressing the teachers’ conditions of service.

According to GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah, the unions reached an understanding with the FWSC on outstanding allowances and arrears, including promotion-related and deprived-area allowances. He urged members to return to the classroom on Monday, while discussions on other unresolved concerns continue.
