International Affairs Analyst Bright Ofori has welcomed Ghana’s decision to pursue membership of BRICS, citing the bloc’s economic influence and the opportunities it could offer the country.
He says joining the grouping could help Ghana expand its international partnerships, strengthen diplomatic relations and access new markets.
“I think it is a rather good idea for Ghana to expand its relationship and strengthen its diplomatic engagement with countries and blocs around the world,” Mr. Ofori said.
He noted that BRICS represents a significant share of the global population and economic output, making it an important platform for Ghana to explore opportunities for trade and economic cooperation.
“The BRICS offer a lot of opportunities for its members,” he said, adding that the bloc represents “a huge market in the world” that Ghana could tap into.
Bright Ofori also pointed to the grouping’s economic significance, stating that its members account for about 40 per cent of the global population and approximately 50 per cent of the world’s gross domestic product.
He believes Ghana’s participation could position the country to benefit from the economic opportunities available through closer engagement with BRICS members.
“It is an appropriate opportunity for us to be part of, to gain some of the benefits that you can get from it for your country,” he said.
Mr. Ofori’s comments come amid discussions over Ghana’s proposed entry into BRICS, a grouping of emerging economies seeking to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen the role of developing countries in global affairs.
The proposed move has also prompted calls from the Minority in Parliament for the government to clarify its objectives and explain how the arrangement would serve Ghana’s national interest.
