Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa has temporarily suspended registration for its ongoing voluntary evacuation exercise, citing the need to process and verify a large number of applications already received.

In a statement issued on June 1, the mission explained that the suspension, which takes effect from Tuesday, June 2, 2026, is to allow officials from the High Commission and South Africa’s Home Affairs authorities to properly screen all submitted applications.

So far, more than 1,500 Ghanaians residing in South Africa have registered for the repatriation exercise, with verification and processing currently ongoing.

The mission clarified that the suspension does not mean the end of the programme, assuring applicants that a new registration phase will be opened after the current batch has been assessed.

It added that the date for the next phase of registration will be communicated in due course, stressing that the evacuation process is still active.

The High Commission also expressed gratitude to the Ghanaian community in South Africa for their cooperation, patience, and understanding, noting that such support is crucial for a smooth and well-organised exercise.

Authorities say the temporary pause is part of efforts to ensure proper evaluation of applications as interest in the voluntary repatriation programme continues to grow.
