The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has entered its final phase, and Ghana now knows the 26 players entrusted with carrying the nation’s hopes to North America. New Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz has revealed his squad for the tournament, blending experience, emerging talent and a handful of bold selections as Ghana prepares for another shot at football history.
After weeks of scouting, analysis and difficult decisions, Queiroz settled on a group that reflects both continuity and change. The Portuguese coach, appointed only recently, faces the challenge of preparing a team for a demanding Group L campaign against Panama, England and Croatia.
The squad features several familiar names. Captain Jordan Ayew, Thomas Partey, Iñaki Williams, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Gideon Mensah and Baba Abdul Rahman will all return to the World Cup stage, bringing valuable tournament experience to a squad that includes a significant number of debutants.
That balance could prove crucial. Ghana’s strongest World Cup campaigns have often combined seasoned leaders with fearless newcomers, most notably during the memorable run to the quarter-finals in 2010.
Among the stories that stand out is the inclusion of Benjamin Asare. The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper becomes the only Ghana Premier League player in the final squad, offering a reminder that domestic football can still provide talent capable of reaching the highest level.
His selection is also symbolic. In recent years, opportunities for home-based players have been limited, making Asare’s call-up a significant moment for local football and for young players hoping to follow a similar path.
The squad also contains several players preparing for their first World Cup experience. Jerome Opoku, Abdul Mumin, Kwasi Sibo, Augustine Boakye, Caleb Yirenkyi, Christopher Bonsu Baah, Ernest Nuamah, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Prince Kwabena Adu will all be eager to make their mark on the global stage.
There were disappointments too. Vice-captain Alexander Djiku misses out through a hamstring injury, while Mohammed Salisu failed to recover in time. Their absence opens the door for Derrick Luckassen, whose first World Cup call-up arrives after helping Pafos secure the Cypriot league title.
The inclusion of Luckassen adds depth and versatility to Ghana’s defence. His recent switch of international allegiance now looks set to deliver one of the biggest moments of his career.
Before the tournament begins, Ghana will face Wales in Cardiff in what could be a final warm-up fixture. It will be the last opportunity for Queiroz to fine-tune his plans before the Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17.
