President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his admiration for Lincoln University despite the institution’s decision to withdraw plans to award him an honorary doctorate.
The university is reported to have rescinded the honour shortly before the scheduled ceremony following concerns within its community over the President’s perceived stance on LGBTQ-related issues.
Speaking to members of the Ghanaian community in Philadelphia on March 26, Mr. Mahama said the development does not diminish the university’s importance to Ghana.
He emphasised Lincoln University’s historic role in shaping Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, describing the institution as deeply connected to the country’s intellectual and Pan-African heritage.
Mr. Mahama added that the longstanding relationship between Ghana and the university remains intact, stressing that the institution will continue to be held in high regard despite the controversy.
