Many of these long-serving presidents have held onto power for decades, guiding their nations through periods of change while also facing growing criticism over issues such as democratic reforms, succession plans, and generational leadership gaps. Their continued dominance reflects a complex mix of political stability, entrenched authority, and historical legacy that continues to influence governance across the continent.

Here are six of the oldest and most influential presidents currently leading African nations:

Paul Biya (Cameroon)

At 92 years, Paul Biya of Cameroon is Africa’s oldest and one of its longest-serving presidents. Born on February 13, 1933, in Mvomeka’a, Biya has been in office since November 6, 1982. His presidency, which has lasted over four decades, is characterized by strong central control and limited political opposition.

Jean-Lucien Kwassi Lanyo Savi de Tové (Togo)

Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové, aged 86, is one of the country’s senior political figures. Born on May 7, 1939, in Lomé, he has long been involved in Togo’s political landscape, holding various diplomatic and advisory positions that have helped shape national policy and represent the country internationally.

Peter Mutharika (Malawi)

Former Malawian President Peter Mutharika, aged 85, was born on July 18, 1940, in Chisoka, Nyasaland (now Malawi). A constitutional lawyer and academic by profession, Mutharika served as president from 2014 to 2020. His administration focused on economic growth and infrastructure development but faced allegations of corruption and electoral irregularities.

Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (Equatorial Guinea)

Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, aged 83, holds the title of the world’s longest-serving president. Born on June 5, 1942, in Akoakam, Obiang came to power through a military coup on August 3, 1979, and has ruled ever since.

Alassane Ouattara (Ivory Coast)

Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast, now 83 years old, was born on January 1, 1942, in Dimbokro. He has been in power since December 4, 2010. A trained economist and former IMF official, Ouattara is credited with transforming the Ivorian economy and maintaining relative stability after years of political turmoil. However, his decision to seek multiple terms has drawn criticism and sparked debates over constitutional limits and the sustainability of democratic principles in the country.

Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe)

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, also 83, was born on September 15, 1942, in Zvishavane. Mnangagwa rose to power in November 2017 following a military-assisted transition that ousted long-time ruler Robert Mugabe. His administration promised reform, but Zimbabwe still faces significant economic and political challenges, with limited improvements in democratic freedoms.
