Arsenal rocked by injuries as Ødegaard and Saka miss Champions League opener

Arsenal’s Champions League return will begin without two of their brightest stars. Captain Martin Ødegaard and winger Bukayo Saka have both been ruled out of today’s opener against Athletic Club, handing Mikel Arteta an early headache on Europe’s biggest stage.

Ødegaard was forced off after only 17 minutes in Saturday’s Premier League win over Nottingham Forest. The midfielder landed awkwardly on his right shoulder following a challenge by Morgan Gibbs-White, and scans confirmed he would not recover in time for midweek action.

Saka has been missing since August 23 when he suffered a hamstring problem against Leeds. His absence has left a noticeable gap in Arsenal’s attack, with his direct runs and creativity often sparking their best moments. Arteta admitted last week that the England international is desperate to return, but the club’s medical staff are unwilling to take risks so early in the season.

There was some relief for Arsenal as William Saliba returned to full training at London Colney. The French defender missed the Forest game, but his presence will be vital against a Bilbao side known for their physical, fast-paced style. Ben White, however, did not take part on Monday, raising fresh concerns about Arsenal’s defensive depth.

For Athletic, head coach Ernesto Valverde was respectful but bullish in his assessment of the challenge ahead. “They are one of the favourites to win the Champions League thanks to their technical and tactical ability, and the winning spirit that Arteta has instilled,” he said. Yet Valverde also suggested his side will relish the test, pointing to Bilbao’s tradition of upsetting European giants.

The clash carries added weight for Arsenal, who will be looking to will the Champions League after a late run in the competition last season. Arteta has spoken about restoring the club’s European identity, and a strong start would fuel belief that his project can go the distance. But the absence of Ødegaard and Saka leaves question marks over where the goals and leadership will come from.
