Ghana’s music scene has been plunged into mourning following the passing of iconic highlife artist Daddy Lumba, who died in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra.

Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, Daddy Lumba was more than a musician. For over three decades, he was a voice of a generation, a cultural force, and a symbol of Ghanaian identity. From the lively rhythms of Aben Wo Ha to the philosophical depth of Yentie Obiaa, his music shaped parties, politics, and everyday life.

His musical journey began in the 1980s, but it was the collaboration with Nana Acheampong as the Lumba Brothers that launched him into the spotlight. Their debut album Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu struck a national chord. From there, Lumba’s solo career flourished, resulting in more than 30 albums and a legacy that bridged continents and decades.

The family, in a brief statement confirming his death, requested privacy during this period of deep grief. The announcement has sparked an outpouring of tributes on social media, with many sharing memories and lyrics that shaped their lives.

For Ghanaians at home and abroad, this loss feels personal. Daddy Lumba wasn’t just an artist; he was part of the fabric of daily life. His absence will echo through the speakers of trotro radios and across the stages he once owned with such ease and charm.
