Ghana’s Black Queens booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a dominant 4-1 win over Tanzania in their final Group C match.
Princella Adubea opened the scoring early, pouncing on a goalkeeping error to put Ghana ahead in the 13th minute. The Queens created more chances but couldn’t find a second before Tanzania struck back through Stumai Abdallah just before the break.
Despite the setback, Ghana came out stronger in the second half. Alice Kusi calmly converted a penalty to restore their lead. Evelyn Badu then made it 3-1 with a composed finish before Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah sealed the victory with a brilliant strike.
Boye-Hlorkah’s goal capped off a commanding performance. The forward praised her teammates, saying, “I’m so proud of the girls. They’ve got my back out there, it’s amazing to see everyone working together.”
The result saw Ghana finish second in Group C with four points, behind South Africa. It was a hard-earned spot in the next round after a mixed group stage campaign that started with a 2-0 loss to the reigning champions and a 1-1 draw with Mali.
Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s side showed resilience and maturity in the must-win clash. Their attacking intent, especially in the second half, overwhelmed Tanzania, who could not keep up with Ghana’s tempo.
Now, attention turns to the quarterfinals. The Black Queens will face Algeria on Saturday, July 19, at the Municipal Stadium in Berkane. With momentum on their side, Ghana will believe they can push further into the tournament.
