President John Dramani Mahama has taken a firm stance on transparency in Ghanaian football, insisting that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) be held accountable for its spending. Speaking during the 2025 State of the Nation Address, he stressed that all budgets for national teams, particularly the Black Stars, must be made public. His remarks come at a time when frustrations over the team’s decline and football administration have reached new heights.

Mahama’s directive signals a major push for financial reform within the GFA, which has faced criticism over mismanagement and lack of accountability. “There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national team,” he declared, instructing the Sports and Recreation Minister to ensure full transparency.

With the Black Stars set for crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March, concerns over the team’s funding and performance are at the forefront. Once a continental powerhouse, Ghana’s struggles in recent tournaments have left fans demanding answers. The President’s intervention aims to restore confidence in the nation’s football governance.

Beyond football, Mahama pledged increased investment in infrastructure, grassroots development, and broader athlete support. His focus on governance and funding reforms is expected to bring much-needed changes to Ghanaian sports. Now, all eyes are on the GFA to see how they respond to this renewed call for accountability.
