Borussia Dortmund have relieved head coach Nuri Şahin of his duties after a disheartening 2-1 loss to Bologna in the UEFA Champions League, marking the team’s fourth consecutive defeat in 2025.
The once formidable German side now finds itself languishing in 10th place in the Bundesliga, a staggering 20 points adrift of league leaders Bayern Munich. This downturn in form has raised concerns about their prospects for European competition next season.
Sporting director Lars Ricken expressed the club’s regret over the decision, stating, “We value Nuri Şahin and his work very much… This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”
Şahin, a former Dortmund player with over 250 appearances, took the helm in June 2024, succeeding Edin Terzić. Despite a promising start, the team’s performance declined sharply, culminating in their current predicament.
Looking ahead, speculation is rife about Şahin’s successor. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been linked to the position, having been spotted at recent Dortmund matches. However, reports suggest no formal negotiations have taken place.
