NBA fines Philadelphia 76ers $100,000 for misrepresenting Joel Embiid’s injury

Embiid, a former MVP, has been vocal about prioritizing his long-term health and playoff readiness over regular season wins. His cautious approach comes after another season-ending injury in last year's playoffs.

The NBA has slapped the Philadelphia 76ers with a $100,000 fine for misrepresenting the health status of their star center, Joel Embiid. Embiid has missed the team’s first three games due to a left knee condition, but public comments from head coach Nick Nurse and president of basketball operations Daryl Morey didn’t accurately reflect his injury.

The NBA investigated the Sixers and found that while their injury report didn’t violate the player participation policy, the statements about Embiid’s injury were inconsistent with the league’s transparency requirements.

Embiid, a former MVP, has been vocal about prioritizing his long-term health and playoff readiness over regular season wins. His cautious approach comes after another season-ending injury in last year’s playoffs.

However, the NBA’s investigation revealed that the Sixers misrepresented the nature of his condition. Nurse and Morey’s comments suggested Embiid was merely undergoing a “ramp-up” process without specific concerns about his knee, which the NBA found inaccurate.

“This fine emphasizes the NBA’s stance on transparency,” a league spokesperson said.

The Sixers face further challenges with the absence of Paul George, who’s out with a left knee bone bruise. Both Embiid and George participated in limited practices but were ruled out for the Sixers’ next game against the Detroit Pistons.

Philadelphia has struggled to overcome these early injuries, starting the season 1-2. Young star Tyrese Maxey has shouldered the responsibility, dropping 45 points in their lone win against the Indiana Pacers.
