Brazilian football legend Marta has made history once again, claiming the first-ever FIFA Marta Award for the best goal in women’s football. This prestigious honor recognizes her stunning solo effort against Jamaica, a goal that left fans and experts in shock.
Marta’s award winning goal came on June 1 this year against the Jamaicans. She took the ball in her stride before skipping past her marker with some step-overs, before smashing the ball into the top corner from the edge of the penalty box.
The award, named after Marta herself, acknowledges her incredible contribution to women’s football. With a record six FIFA awards for leading women’s player, Marta’s legacy continues to inspire generations of footballers.
Marta’s magnificent strike was one of 11 nominees, and it edged out goals by Asisat Oshoala and Sakina Karchaoui. The Brazilian legend’s effort earned 22 scoring points, with Oshoala and Karchaoui securing 20 and 16 points, respectively.
The FIFA Marta Award voting process involved two groups: fans and a panel of FIFA Legends. Each group’s selections counted for 50% of the total vote, with points awarded based on the ranking (five points for first, three for second, and one for third).
Marta announced her retirement from international football earlier this year after Brazil lost to USA in the Paris Olympics final. Marta scored 119 goals in 185 appearances for the Brazilian women’s national team.
