Manchester United and Argentina forward Alejandro Garnacho has been crowned the winner of the FIFA Puskás Award 2024 for his breathtaking overhead kick against Everton in the English Premier League. Garnacho’s incredible strike, edged out stiff competition from Yassine Benzia and Denis Omedi.
Garnacho’s moment of magic occurred in November 2023, when he opened the scoring for Manchester United against Everton at Goodison Park. Diogo Dalot’s lofted cross seemed slightly behind the Argentine, but he launched himself into mid-air, sending a stunning overhead kick rocketing into Jordan Pickford’s goal.
“I had tried this technique so many times in training,” Garnacho shared with FIFA. “I thought, ‘This is the time to do it, to see what happens.’ And I scored, so it was perfect” His teammates were equally amazed, with Garnacho recalling, “After the goal, my teammates had their hands on their heads. They were like, ‘How did you do this?”
The announcement was made by Juventus and Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero at The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony in Doha, Qatar. Garnacho became the second Manchester United player to win the Puskás Award, following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, who won in 2009.
