For 93 minutes, Qatar looked destined for another World Cup defeat. Then came Boualem Khoukhi’s towering header, a moment that changed history and sent an entire nation into celebration as the Gulf side secured their first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland.
Switzerland arrived at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium expecting to make a winning start to their Group B campaign. By the final whistle, however, they were left wondering how a match they dominated had slipped through their fingers.
The Swiss produced wave after wave of attacks and finished with 26 shots, their highest total in a World Cup match since records began in 1966. Yet all that pressure yielded only a single goal as poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping kept Qatar alive.
The breakthrough came after just 17 minutes. Remo Freuler burst into the box and was brought down by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, prompting referee Said Martinez to point immediately to the spot.
After a lengthy VAR review, Breel Embolo calmly converted the penalty, sending Abunada the wrong way. It was a landmark goal for Switzerland, their first-ever penalty scored at a World Cup.
From there, the game seemed to follow a familiar script. Switzerland controlled possession, created chances, and repeatedly threatened to extend their lead.
Dan Ndoye came closest on several occasions but failed to find the decisive touch. Ruben Vargas was denied by Abunada, while Michel Aebischer saw an effort dramatically cleared off the line before half-time.
Abunada, despite his role in the penalty, gradually became Qatar’s unlikely hero. The goalkeeper produced a series of important saves that kept the Asian champions within touching distance.
Qatar offered little going forward for long periods. Akram Afif was tightly marked, while Edmilson Junior struggled to turn promising moments into genuine opportunities.
Yet Julen Lopetegui’s side never stopped believing. Their defensive discipline frustrated Switzerland as the game entered its closing stages.
The tension inside the stadium grew with every missed Swiss chance. Murat Yakin’s men appeared comfortable, but their failure to find a second goal left the door slightly open.
Then came the moment Qatar will remember for generations.
Deep into stoppage time, Homam El Amin delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area. Khoukhi rose above the Swiss defence and powered a header beyond Gregor Kobel to spark scenes of pure jubilation.
The entire Qatar squad poured onto the pitch as players and staff celebrated a result that felt like a victory. Four years after losing all three matches as World Cup hosts in 2022, Qatar finally had a point to call their own.
For Switzerland, the draw felt painful. For Qatar, it felt historic.
In a group where every team now sits level on one point, Khoukhi’s dramatic intervention may yet prove to be one of the defining moments of the tournament’s opening week.
