Brazil held by Morocco after stunning Vinicius equalizer

Brazil’s unbeaten record in World Cup openers survived another day, but only just. Vinicius Junior produced a moment of brilliance to earn a 1-1 draw against an impressive Morocco side that matched, and at times outplayed, the five-time world champions in a gripping Group C clash in New York.

I’m a game packed with energy and intensity at MetLife Stadium, Morocco arrived without fear. The Atlas Lions, fresh from years of steady growth on the global stage, pressed high, moved the ball with confidence, and forced Brazil into mistakes from the opening whistle.

Their reward came in the 21st minute.

Brahim Diaz spotted a gap between Gabriel and Marquinhos and threaded a precise pass through the heart of Brazil’s defence. Ismael Saibari raced onto it, kept his composure, and lifted a delightful finish over Alisson to send the Moroccan supporters into celebration.

It was a historic moment. Morocco became the first African side to score against South American opposition at a World Cup after previous blanks against Peru and Brazil. More importantly, it reflected the courage and quality that have transformed them into one of football’s rising forces.

Brazil looked shaken.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to cope with Morocco’s pressure during the opening half hour. The Africans registered 12 shots in the first 30 minutes, a remarkable statistic against a nation known for controlling matches on the biggest stage.

“I think we didn’t start very well, I’m a little worried,” admitted Ancelotti. “We lost a lot of duels and possession, but we improved in the second half of a difficult match, because Morocco is a good team.”

Yet Brazil possess something few teams can match, individual brilliance.

Making his 50th appearance for the Selecao, Vinicius Junior stepped forward when his team needed him most. The Real Madrid star exchanged passes with Bruno Guimaraes, cut inside, and unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner beyond Yassine Bounou.

The goal shifted the mood and preserved Brazil’s remarkable unbeaten run in opening World Cup matches, a streak stretching back to 1934.

The second half was tighter. Morocco defended with discipline while still threatening on the break. Late on, Alisson produced a brilliant double save to deny Neil El Aynaoui and Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab, ensuring Brazil escaped with a point.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi was proud of the performance. “It was not easy… they are one of the favourites for the tournament. We drew but we are happy with the performance.”

The match also showcased Morocco’s bright future. Eighteen-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi impressed on his senior debut, controlling possession with maturity beyond his years. Coach Mohamed Ouahbi was unsurprised.

“It was not a risk to play him just because he’s 18,” Ouahbi said. “I only look at players’ performance, not the age of the player.”

If this contest is any indication, both teams have a major role to play in this World Cup. Brazil remain dangerous, but Morocco have shown they belong among the elite.
