Cristiano Ronaldo has spent more than two decades rewriting football’s record books. On a memorable night in Houston, the Portugal captain added another chapter to his extraordinary legacy, becoming the first player ever to score at six different FIFA World Cups.

The 41-year-old struck twice as Portugal swept aside Uzbekistan 5-0, responding in emphatic fashion after criticism following their disappointing draw against DR Congo. More importantly, Portugal’s first victory of the tournament reignited belief that Roberto Martinez’s side could be genuine contenders.

Questions had surrounded Ronaldo after a quiet opening match. With Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland already lighting up the competition, many wondered whether Portugal’s iconic No. 7 still had a defining role to play.

Ronaldo answered within six minutes.

Joao Cancelo’s low cross found the veteran forward at the near post, and the finish was vintage Ronaldo. Clean, instinctive and ruthless. The goal not only put Portugal ahead but also placed him alone in World Cup history, having now scored in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments.

Portugal quickly tightened their grip on the contest. Nuno Mendes caught everyone by surprise with a superb low free-kick after Ronaldo appeared set to take the responsibility himself. The clever routine reflected a Portugal side that looked sharper and more inventive than in their opening game.

Uzbekistan briefly thought they had found a route back when Aziz G’aniev fired home spectacularly, only for VAR to intervene and rule the effort out. Moments later, Portugal punished them.

Bruno Fernandes won possession and delivered a perfectly weighted pass through the middle. Ronaldo timed his run to perfection before guiding a precise finish into the bottom corner for his second of the night and Portugal’s third.

The goal carried extra significance. It moved Ronaldo past Portuguese legend Eusebio as his country’s leading scorer at World Cup finals with 10 goals.

Portugal never eased off. An unfortunate own goal from goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov made it four before Rafael Leao blasted home a fifth late on. Ronaldo came close to completing a hat-trick, with one audacious lob cleared off the line and several other chances narrowly missed.

The statistics highlighted Portugal’s dominance. They produced 17 shots and controlled possession throughout, while Uzbekistan struggled to create meaningful opportunities.

For Ronaldo, though, this night was about more than numbers. It was about proving he still belongs among football’s elite. At 41, he became the second-oldest scorer in World Cup history behind Roger Milla, yet he looked as hungry as ever.

At full-time, cameras caught him shouting, “I’m back, I’m back.”

The message was clear. The doubters had spoken after Matchday One. Ronaldo delivered his answer on football’s biggest stage.
