AC Milan’s Champions League hopes hang in the balance as they return to the San Siro needing to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Feyenoord. History is not on their side as only once in six attempts have the Rossoneri advanced after losing the first leg of a knockout tie. But their formidable home record offers hope.
Milan have not lost at home in any competition since October, winning seven and drawing five in that span. They have also won their last three Champions League fixtures at the San Siro. A fourth would mark their best streak since 2007, the year they last lifted the trophy. Feyenoord, meanwhile, are chasing history of their own, seeking a first last-16 appearance in Europe’s top competition in 50 years.
The Dutch side arrive with momentum after their narrow first-leg victory, masterminded by interim boss Pascal Bosschaart. Feyenoord have yet to concede under his leadership, including a weekend stalemate with NAC Breda. However, their Champions League away record is concerning with just three wins in their last 17 road games. They have lost five of six visits to Italy, including a previous knockout tie against Milan.
Milan will look to January signing Santiago Giménez to deliver the goals. The ex-Feyenoord striker has hit the net in consecutive Serie A matches, both late winners. The visitors, however, have a danger man of their own in Igor Paixão, whose early strike decided the first leg.
