Waste management firm Zoomlion Ghana Limited has clarified that its contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) under the Street Sweeping Programme reached its natural expiration in September 2024, countering media reports suggesting it was terminated by the government.
In a statement responding to a June 11, 2025 letter from the Office of the President, Zoomlion stated that the contract, originally due to end in March 2024, was extended for six months before expiring as scheduled.
“The contract has therefore reached its natural conclusion and expired,” the company said.
“Contrary to claims in some media reports, this expiration does not constitute a termination or cancellation of the agreement by the government, and that is not what the Office of the President stated.”
The Presidency’s letter followed a petition by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni and confirmed that the contract would not be renewed. It also stated that future sanitation contracts would be awarded through competitive tendering to ensure transparency and value for money.
Zoomlion welcomed the government’s move towards accountability and procurement reform, stating, “Zoomlion Ghana Limited fully supports and welcomes this approach.”
The company also clarified that the now-expired contract was competitively procured in 2019 and expressed readiness to participate in future tenders.
“We are well prepared and eager to actively participate in any forthcoming competitive procurement processes.”
Regarding the audit of post-expiration payments, Zoomlion affirmed its support.
“As a responsible corporate entity, transparency, integrity, and delivering value for money are core to our operations,” it noted.
Zoomlion reiterated its commitment to the welfare of sanitation workers and endorsed the government’s initiative to enhance their working conditions.
“Zoomlion remains deeply committed to ensuring dignified and sustainable livelihoods for sanitation workers across the country.”
The company emphasized that the development does not affect its other operations or contracts with YEA or other government agencies.
Zoomlion also highlighted growing international interest in its waste management model, citing engagement with 24 African countries exploring similar initiatives.
The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the company’s support for the government’s “RESET” agenda and its broader national development goals.
“Our shared goal remains to build a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Ghana for the benefit of all citizens.”
