The Vice President, H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially launched the GoRide, a new ride-hailing app developed specifically for local taxi drivers.
According to him, this initiative which is in partnership with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), GoRide demonstrates the governmentws unweaving support to empowering Ghanaian taxi drivers who have faced increasing competition from foreign-owned digital transportation platforms.
“This is about restoring dignity to our divers and ensuring that they thrive. This initiative reflects our government’s unwavering dedication to supporting local businesses and driving growth by keeping the profit generated by GoRide” he stated.
The app aims to support drivers with a competitive 10% commission rate, enabling them to retain more of their earnings. He highlighted that this initiative, integrated with Tap and Go—a local fintech service—will strengthen the domestic digital economy and support the fintech sector.
“With a competitive commission of just 10%, our drivers are being empowered to retain their hard-earned money, allowing them to improve their financial stability and support their families” he noted.
Speaking at the launch in Accra, he emphasized that GoRide will generate employment opportunities not only drivers but also for car maintenance workers, banking professionals, and others, helping to reduce unemployment and bridge the gap between formal and informal economies in Ghana.
Expressing confidence in the nation’s IT capabilities, the Vice President suggested the potential for GoRide to expand to other countries, similar to foreign ride-hailing platforms that have entered the Ghanaian market.
The GoRide app which is available on the Android and iOS stores, is set to foster greater economic self-reliance and wealth retention within the country.
