The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced the suspension of its strike against illegal mining, or galamsey, following a democratic vote by its members.

Despite the decision to halt the strike, UTAG emphasized its “unwavering commitment to efforts to safeguard our natural resources from the harmful effects of illegal mining.” The association acknowledged the damage galamsey causes, including “its devastating impact on Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and countless communities.”

In a press statement, UTAG cited “the current circumstances in the country as well as the interests of our students and their parents/guardians” as key reasons for suspending the strike, pledging instead to “explore alternative legal avenues to address this critical issue.”

While halting the strike, UTAG affirmed, “we will not relent in our efforts to bring about meaningful change in the fight against illegal mining,” and thanked members for their active dedication to the cause.
