Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced that the 24-hour economy policy will be introduced within the Parliamentary Service, marking the start of a broader national effort to increase productivity and combat unemployment.
The initiative comes in response to concerns over the increasing workload among parliamentary staff, particularly following the House’s recent adjustment to its sitting time from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
“This means they are going to work more hours; they will be reporting at 8:00 a.m. and may be going home at 10:00 p.m. or sometimes 11:00 p.m.—particularly those in the official division of the House,” Bagbin stated on Thursday, June 26, during the presentation of the final 24-hour economy policy document in Parliament.
“This will allow more people to work here and will help reduce unemployment. I can assure you that the load of work here is unimaginable.”
The 24-hour economy policy, a flagship campaign promise of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is set to be officially launched nationwide on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
Presidential Advisor on the policy, Goosie Tanoh, described it as a transformative strategy to enhance national productivity through continuous economic activity while creating jobs across sectors.
He outlined three main pillars underpinning the policy:
- Transforming production
- Improving supply chain and market systems
- Enhancing human capital
